Our Dating Sim || Short & Honest BL Review

our dating sim korean bl

Our Dating Sim is a Korean BL drama having total of 8 episodes. It tells a story about a unrequited love. The main character Lee Wan has a huge crush on his best friend, Shin Gi Tae. One day, he finally gathers the courage to tell about his feelings but things take turn in another way.

I was not expecting to watch any Korean bl drama at the moment but this one popped up in my reels and I just had to watch it. And, the girl right here is a big binge-watcher. No wonder, I finished the drama in one day.

Synopsis:

Our Dating Sim is about two boys named Shin Gi-Tae and Lee Wan who were best friends in high school. They were fond of each other. But, after Lee Wan confessed to Shin Gi Tae, everything came crashing down. Lee Wan runs away after that confession. After only 7 years, they met again in the workplace.

What will happen now the past has resurfaced again? Will they reunite? or Will they act as if nothing had happened in their high school days?

Simple and cute love story

Reading the synopsis, you might wonder if this drama will definitely have a lot of drama and intense scenes. But let me assure you it has none of that. Instead, it contains a lot of cute and bickering scenes. They met each other in the workplace. Lee Wan recently got an offer as an artist to work on a gaming application. And, there is Shin Gi Tae working in the same company as a coder. That’s how they met each other after 7 years. One of them is an artist and another is a coder, it kind of reminded me of Semantic Error drama.

At first, it is quite annoying seeing both of them acting nonchalantly. Like……. fight each other, communicate your feelings, do something, don’t act like everything is normal because it isn’t. You guys are meeting after so long and the departure was not even done properly. But, I want to tell you, be patient and enjoy. Don’t be impatient like me. Everything falls perfectly into its own place at last. In the end, you will see it’s literally a cute love story that had a little misunderstanding that had taken a long time to solve.

The drama is cute and sweet in a way that I didn’t expect. It can be definitely listed in one of my My Top 5 Cute and Fluffy BL To Watch.

loved the chemistry

In BL, I look forward to the chemistry of the actors. Even if the storyline is amazing and great, if the chemistry fails, it messes up everything. As an audience, I can’t grab what the characters are willing to say and what are they feeling if there is even slight awkwardness on screen. It feels out of place and emotions are not delivered.

Honestly, I see a lot of failed chemistry in Korean BL. I think it’s because the concept is new and just recently is getting recognition, there are not enough reference and every actor are new too. Aside from that, the actors in this drama are great and good at playing the characters. Their chemistry is seen on screen and watching them has made my heart flutter and happy. I have no complaints regarding their chemistry. And, damn they are good at kissing too lol.

Short episodes were enough

Korean BL is known for having short episodes with 15 min maximum airing. No wonder, Our Dating Sim had at least 15 min episodes too. Though having short episodes, it has managed to showcase all the necessary things in displaying chemistry, plot, emotions, heartbreak, unrequited love, and pain. I was very happy with the way the drama was executed and directed. I could really connect with the characters. The story was not rushed and fast-pacing. The timing of the drama was perfect, it delivered what it needed to deliver to the audience.

The episodes were short, yes, but they covered all the matters. I didn’t feel the gap between the episodes nor was I confused. Moreover, as a BL fan, I just wished there were more episodes. I kind of wish the episodes would be longer than the previous one while watching. I genuinely loved the drama. And, I would love the special episodes if they are kind enough to make one.

Beautiful message

In my previous blog post – My dreams till now 2, I shared my uncertainties and what-ifs that prevented me from experiencing the best. Watching this drama reminded me of how I was back then. Our dating sim also focuses on the ‘fight or flight’ situation in the life of Lee Wan.

It shows Lee Wan always chooses to run away from the matter that fears him the most. He assumes the conclusion himself without actually facing them. He fears the uncertainties and changes. Despite being brave enough to tell how he feels towards Shin Gi Tae, he, at last, chooses to runway and hide rather than facing the consequences. Who knows what might have happened if he had chosen to stay behind? Shin Gi Tae might have reciprocated his feelings and they would be more than friends. It might have changed their relationship for the better, not like Lee Wan had thought.

I am happy the drama ended on a positive note. It tried to deliver the message that running away is not a solution. We should face whatever comes into our life. Face it and move forward. Everything will fall into its place as always.

Conclusion

Overall, Our Dating Sim is a good drama. It is highly recommended to new BL fans and beginners. If you like binge-watching drama, this drama is suited. You can literally finish in one go and in one day. You can expect a whole package of unrequited love, heartbreak, pain and sadness, cuteness, sweet scenes, and great chemistry.

I am happy the Korean BL industry is evolving and a lot of dramas are being released this year. I think this year will be a year for Korean BLs. Recently, I finished reading Shoulder To Cry On. And, I can’t say how much I loved it. The story is worth it containing about mental illness, adolescent problems, and dreams. I am really excited and hyped to watch the drama now.
