February has already started filling the love and romance in the air.
There are tons and tons of mind-blowing and fantastic romance k-dramas released every year. Some of them might be super-popular whereas some might be underrated. Back then, I used to watch a lot of K-dramas but now, I have other commitments that have restricted my watch time to some limits. Nevertheless, once a k-drama fan, always a k-drama fan. I have recommend my 5 Top Romance Kdrama I’ve watched till now in this section.
Spread love, give love and embrace love.
Strong Woman Do Bong Soon
Short Synopsis
Do Bong-soon (Park Bo-young) was born with superhuman strength. Her strength is hereditary and passed along only to the women in her family. Her dream is to create a video game with herself as the main character.
She desperately wants to become a delicate and elegant woman, which is the ideal type of her crush, In Guk-doo (Ji Soo), a police officer. Thanks to her strength, she gets a job as bodyguard to rich heir Ahn Min-hyuk (Park Hyung-sik), the CEO of a gaming company, Ainsoft.
A series of kidnapping cases happen in Dobong-dong, the district Bong-soon lives in, and she is determined to catch the culprit, who targeted her best friend. With help and training from Min-hyuk, she manages to control her strength to use it for good causes. Min-hyuk and Bong-soon find their relationship growing into something more. Their relationship at work and in pursuit of the kidnapper creates comical and dangerous situations, which bring them closer.

My first recommendation is one of my favorite K-dramas of all time. Strong Woman Do Bong Soon remains at the top list when it comes to rom-com. I have never laughed and have been excited about any drama as I was for this one. And, on top of that, I watched it while it was ongoing at that time.
I was crazy and mad about this drama. It was crazy to the extent that I watched one of its episodes in raw without any subtitles. You can guess how I was crazy and impatient that I couldn’t wait for the subtitles.
I’m not sure how to put it, but simply seeing them together makes my heart happy and full of love. There may not be another couple as adorable as this one that I have come across.
I’ve heard that there will be a sequel to this drama, but the main leads will change. I’m a little upset about it, but I also want to give other actors a chance if they can capture my heart the way Strong Woman Do Bong Soon did.
Business Proposal
Short Synopsis
Shin Ha-ri (Kim Se-jeong) goes on a blind date after she agrees to replace her friend, Jin Young-seo (Seol In-ah), whose father had arranged it. The plan is to have Ha-ri ‘getting rejected’ by her prospective partner. However, it goes awry when her date turns out to be Kang Tae-moo (Ahn Hyo-seop), CEO of Go Food, the company where Ha-ri works.
Tae-moo, who is being pressured by his grandfather Kang Da-goo (Lee Deok-hwa), the chairman of Go Food’s parent company, to go on blind dates with suitable marriage partners, decides to marry his blind date partner to avoid going on the rest of the dates, without knowing she is the fake Jin Young-seo or that she is his employee, which she assiduously tries to hide.
However, Ha-ri’s fake identity, but thankfully not her employment status, is soon exposed after the real Jin Young-seo gets into a parking accident with Cha Sung-hoon (Kim Min-kyu), Tae-moo’s secretary, who was acting as Tae-moo’s driver at that moment.

The way this drama blew up…..It deserved that hype though.
I remember at that time there were trends of mystery-suspense kind of k-drama rather than rom-com. Of course, I have no problem with that kind of drama but it takes so much energy from me when I watch it. I have to be in full-focused mode thinking about the mystery and solving each piece. I have to watch the pain, sorrow, and sadness of the main characters. And, in the end, it didn’t have a happy ending too.
This drama was a breath of fresh air. It brought me back to 2016 when rom-com dramas were popular. Business Proposal is a classic representation of how actually the k-drama used to be back then. Even if the story were unbelievable and a little bit unrealistic but it was fun and enjoyable. I think it is the reason why it became so popular.
The chemistry between the main characters…..it was chef’s kiss. There are two main couples and I love the fact that there is no love triangle. Each couple gets equal screen time and of course, the story is interrelated with all four characters that eventually make them fall in love with each other.
In short, the drama includes all things from fake dating to the rich-poor couple trope that I know all romance lovers are fan of.
Romance is a Bonus Book
Short Synopsis
Cha Eun-ho enlists Kang Dan-i to help him find a housekeeper – but he has no idea Kang Dan-i is the one doing the work and taking payment. Her husband has cheated on her, and she is now divorced and unemployed, but he is also unaware of her living situation and the hardships she is facing as a divorced single mother with a large gap in work experience trying to re-enter the professional world.
Eventually, Kang Dan-i is no longer able to keep her secrets from him, and Cha Eun-ho lends her a helping hand. Their lives become even more intertwined when Kang Dan-i applies to be a temporary task support worker at his publishing company. Although Cha Eun-ho is initially worried about how she will perform, Kang Dan-i surprises him and other senior executives with her creativity and hard work.

I watched this drama pretty late. It wasn’t on my ‘to-be watch list’ too. I watched it because I was bored and didn’t think I would like it so much. It is probably one of the most beautiful k-drama I have watched.
Romance is a Bonus Book, the title itself is the definition of love and romance. As a book lover, I love how it showcased the process of the book-writing process. It showed the difficulties of the author, how they can suffer mind-blocked and couldn’t write anything, and how there is a deadline for each chapter or page.
Moreover, I learned about how the publisher works with a graphic designer to make the cover of their book. I am bookish and seeing how the books are published, through this drama I had opportunity to explore book industry.
Apart from the book plot, I loved the friendship between the main characters. The love and understanding they had from the beginning made their bond even more special and beautiful. It didn’t matter if they were in a relationship or not. They would be always there for each other and to have that kind of bond in life is a rare thing. And, the bond became even more special after romance bloomed into their relationship.
Forbidden Marriage
Short Synopsis
Set in a fictional period within the Joseon dynasty, the series follows the story of King Lee Heon who has issued a marriage ban after the death of his crown princess seven years ago, and scammer So-rang who claims that she can be possessed by the late crown princess’s spirit.

Forbidden Marriage showed a fresh and new concept in regard to historical drama. What do we usually think when we think of historical drama? We think about conspiracy, murder in the palace, king, and queen, cold war between the palace members, etc. We expect intense action scenes with a twist-and-turn plot, although romance is not necessary at some point. This drama contradicts all these things.
Forbidden Marriage gives a similar vibe to drama called ‘100 Days with My Prince’. It contains the right amount of comedy, romance, and suspense. I love the concept and message that it gives.
The story starts off with forbidding love and marriage in the country due to some internal conflict in the palace but slowly in the process, it also showed that love and marriage are one of the most important aspects of life. Without love, we couldn’t survive and we always fight for love. Moreover, I felt positivity and happiness from watching this drama and would definitely recommend it.
Another historical drama I’ve watched around this time was Alchemy of Souls: Light and Shadow which was beautiful, painful, joyful and enjoyable too.
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo
Short Synopsis
Kim Bok joo (Lee Sung-Kyung), a young woman chasing her dream of weightlifting on an athletics college campus, develops a crush on her friend Jung Joon-Hyung’s (Nam Joo-Hyuk) older brother, Jung Jae-Yi (Lee Jae-Yoon). At first, Joon Hyung teases her and goes along with her act, even helping her, but soon finds himself falling in love with her. This series is a coming-of-age story about a group of college athletes who are fighting for their dreams, experiencing and finding love in the process, and growing every step of the way.

When I say 2016 is the best year where rom-com / were released, it is the fact. Along with Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo is also my all-time favorite k-drama. I don’t know why they stopped making this kind of drama nowadays but I want the trend back.
First and foremost, I loved the personality of Kim Bok-Joo. She is carefree, daring, brave, fun-loving, energetic, hard-working, and sometimes dumb too but she is just adorable. She inspires me to be that girl, to dream big and make it realistic.
But, she has her own insecurities and doubts herself time and again. It makes her real and raw. She is an actual representation of every girl in the world about having insecurities despite being emotionally strong.
Joon Hyung is a another favorite of mine. He is an approachable, encouraging, and outgoing person who I believe should be in everyone’s lives. He often makes fun of Bok Joon for liking his brother, but with time he develops feelings for her. I cherished the progression from taunting a friend to him genuinely understanding his own emotions.
