August BL dramas were something else…

BL dramas

August BL dramas were literally a something else for BL fans. We were blessed with as much BL content as possible last month. And, the worst thing was I was having an exam then. I couldn’t watch most of the dramas on time because of it. Nevertheless, now that the exam is over, I finally watched BL dramas. I have to say August was definitely a month for BL fans.

I literally jotted down a list of BL dramas so that I could binge-watch these dramas after my exams were over. Tell me, this is not the behavior of a BL fan, because it is.

So, here I am going to highlight some of the scenes from my watched BL dramas. I will tell you if it is worth your time or not.

1.Red White Blue Royal:

When I first heard that my favorite BL book was going to be made into a movie, I couldn’t be more happy. And, the casting for this movie is just a chef’s kiss. It was perfect. The actors who played the main characters, were as I had imagined while reading the book. And, along with other supporting actors.

My most favorite scene from this movie is absolutely going to be the “cake” scene. A huge pound of cake fell over both of the main characters, Alex and Henry. I swear, it is still date, the most hilarious scene I’ve witnessed. And, through which the storyline began to take shape and finally, the movie started.

I was happy that the movie didn’t exclude most of the scenes from the book and didn’t deviate its content in large amounts. But, it definitely felt rushed at the last 20-30 minutes of the movie. It was like forcing everything to take its place because of limited time.

When all the things were messed up, there were problems in each of their life, they were fighting for the LGBTQ+ community, and the need for satisfaction that the characters finally got their happy ending was not delivered well enough and was not as expected. I wish I would see more book scenes, their detailed version of love emails just like in the book. They rushed the ending parts. The scenes would jump from one context to another real quick. As a viewer, I felt confused and wondered what is happening because it was going too fast.

To tell you, if this movie is worth your time or not? it is, despite my criticism of the ending part. First of all, the actors have great chemistry. You couldn’t take your eyes off them because of their sizzling chemistry. They were superb at acting and played their characters better than I had imagined. And, because the movie had adapted the same storyline as the book, I enjoyed watching it. I had the feeling, that I watched “Red White Royal Blue” twice time, the first time when I was reading the book and the second time watching it as a movie.

2. Heartstopper S2:

This is one of my most favorite BL out there which is adapted from book series. It has a simple love story about two boys, Nick and Charlie falling in love with each other along with important topics like finding yourself, coming out to the world, people’s perception of homosexuality, a person being asexual and transgender, and their struggle in day-to-day life.

Surely, today’s generation is more accepting than that of the older generation but it doesn’t exclude the fact that it is difficult to coming out to the world where you overthink what the people would say about you. And, it is also important that the journey to find out who you are and who you like should never be judged.

Honestly, I am not a big fan of series getting a lot of seasons because it feels like the makers are necessarily trying to stretch out the storyline when it should have finished in the first season itself. But, Heartstopper S2 did surprise me with its content and storyline.

I was looking forward to it. I was going to see my favorite characters back again but, I was worried that I would feel disappointed. However, the series proved me wrong. I enjoyed watching every episode. And, of course, like everyone in the series were shocked that Nick can speak French, I was also shocked. I thought that he was cool. Charlie, you are so lucky.

I love how the series covered the topic of coming out. Like, it is not necessary and essential to come out to the whole world and there is no deadline to do that. You are not obliged to tell the world about your sexuality. Since, Nick had just found out about himself in Heartstopper season 1, in season 2 he felt like he should tell the people about himself, and by not telling he is not doing justice to Charlie, since they couldn’t act like a normal couple.

I love that the series has meticulously covered the topic of ‘coming out to the world’ very beautifully. People, especially younger ones should definitely watch this series if they belong to LGBTQ+ or not, it really doesn’t matter. It will help them get exposure to these sensitive things which should be acceptable and who knows, they might get to find out more about themselves through this series.

Guilty or not, I watched this drama during my exam period lol. 😅

3. Stay by my side:

It has been so long time since I watched Taiwanese drama. I feel like Taiwanese drama has its own unique charm just like Japanese drama. You can’t comprehend the feelings and emotions when you watch their drama. I have a list of cute and fluffy dramas that are most of them being Japanese dramas.

After watching a couple of clips of “Stay by My Side” in shorts and on Instagram. I thought that the chemistry between actors looked promising. So, I added it to my tbw (to be watch) playlist. The exams were over, but the drama was still airing and I loved to binge-watch every drama. Hence, I waited a few weeks and then I wateched it.

The drama had an interesting plot. Gu Bu Xian and Jang Chi didn’t have a good first impression. But, the destiny brings them together as a roommate. The story begins from here. Later, it is also observed that Gu Bu Xian could hear the ghosts speaking, but as long as he stayed in the periphery of Jang Chi, the ghosts would disappear like the air. It was refreshing to see a new concept yet being superstitious. I liked it. It has a cute enemies-to-lovers trope with a little bit of drama and misunderstanding. Both the actors have great chemistry and did good acting.

I just had one problem, I felt the drama was too short and all over the place. There was an incomplete plot – they were practicing basketball, but later weren’t shown anything regarding it, also, the dispute between Jang Chi and his parents was not resolved in the drama, and there were some unnecessary scenes too. Also, the way the drama ended abruptly. There are still many plots left to be answered. I am assuming that there will soon be season 2 coming soon. Nevertheless, I am looking forward to it.

I was watching another clip of the Tawainese drama named “Kiseki Dear To Me”. Oh my god, the chemistry is just fire and unbelievable. I just can’t wait. Please, make the episodes come quickly.

4. Minato Laundromat S2:

What should I say about this drama, Minato Laundromat S2? I don’t know. I have mixed reactions while watching it.

Firstly, I was happy to see a good BL drama getting its Season 2. But, the excitement quickly vanished as soon as I watched the first episode. It is because I felt like the storyline was the same. “Minato Akira” denies to express his love openly and still is conscious. Shin being Shin making approaches to Minato and saying he loves Minato gave off the same vibe that they did in S1. It didn’t feel new and the story was nowhere.

I understand that Minato is concerned about the age gap they have and has a hard time expressing himself but I wished to see Minato declaring his love to Shin and becoming more expressive to his lover, rather than hiding himself and their relationship.

Love is love, despite age or gender. I think Minato should have been more mature and understandable, for its character development. But, on one note, I felt happy that Minato finally accepted their relationship in front of Shin’s doctor, Sakuma Takayuki who is close to Shin and has a higher place in Shin’s heart.

Another thing I love is the second lead couple. Though less screen time, they have been successful in capturing my heart. Their relationship was not vastly shown in S1, but I was happy I got to see them more in this season. Sakuma Shu is an introverted and reserved person and him liking Hanabusa Asuka and feeling jealous over him is everything I wanted to see. Asuka being Asuka, doesn’t wait a single day to be close to him. Though there were some misunderstandings, it made them closer to each other and Shu finally came to realize his likeness to Asuka. Their storyline was cute and sweet. I felt that their relationship took another step, unlike Shin and Minato.

I don’t want to recommend this season but if you want to watch it, it is not that bad too. You can still feel the love and compassion and can find some scenes cute, funny, and sweet.

5. The wedding plan:

Last but not the least is “The Wedding Plan”. It is a Thai BL drama adapted from the novel of the same writer “Love in the Air”. We can see those characters as a cameo in this drama too. When I saw its clips, I kind of liked the vibe of weddings and celebrations. I liked the positive vibes and people having all smiling faces and happy. So, I thought why not give it a try?

Honestly saying, I skipped most of the parts of the drama. The drama didn’t make me so much excited but it is not so disappointing too. First of all, I really had no idea about the concept and story regarding it.

I just thought it was a simple love story between a wedding planner (Namnuea) and a businessman(Sailom) who happens to fall in love at first sight. But, the whole story is on a whole different level, Sailom is preparing for his wedding with another bride but appoints Namnuea to plan his wedding so that he actually could flirt with Namnuea. While there was twist and turns that is revealed at last, it didn’t make things better for me. I couldn’t digest that the story would go this way which felt so absurd and unbelievable.

I know, some of the fans really liked this drama but for me, I think the storyline and plot could have been better and more convincing. But, the good thing, I really liked the chemistry between the actors and would like to see both of them in another project too. The drama is not good if you are really looking for something worth it to watch but if it is for casual watching, I think you should give it a try and might as well let me know if you have the same opinion about it or not.

Conclusion

This was the five BL content that I have recently watched and there is a long list of more BL dramas in the watching list. I just hoped you liked this blog and me rambling about my watched BL drama.
